If purchasing painted canvas from the painter for your backdrop is such a pricey investment, you can always follow our tips on making these low-cost food photography backdrops DIY. As its name suggests, you may need to spend your time and a little amount of money to make the backdrops.
Preparation on Making Food Photography Backdrops DIY
You need to prepare several things before hitting the execution. The first thing is that you need to purchase a plywood sheet. Since the size might be wide and long, you can cut it according to your needs. Cutting it into 600mm x 800mm would be appropriate for a food backdrop. The board would be better if at least 100mm thick.
Also, you need to prepare the paint to make food photography backdrops DIY. If possible, you can get the sample size of the paint. Other than that, make sure it will look matte because you do not want to get the reflection that shows the light and make the picture look unbalanced.
Do not forget to prepare the paintbrush and sponge if needed. When it comes to a paintbrush, make sure you always clean it immediately after using the brush so it will last longer. Prepare a disposable plate to makeshift the paint palette.
A newspaper or other paper is needed because you may need to make textures on the board. Also, make sure you have matte varnish to protect the paint. It costs less than USD 17 and you can make at least 3 backdrops from it.
A Black Splash Board Backdrop
To make this backdrop, you will need to paint the entire board with black color. Prepare the grey paints that come in several different shades. Dip your paintbrush into the grey color and drop it on the blackboard. Make splashing motions until the grey shades create a unique splash to the entire blackboard. You can use white paint but make sure it only highlights the grey ones.
A Raw Cement Board Backdrop
For this look, you will need to paint the whole board with white color and dry it. Splash the grey paint on top of the whiteboard and before the paint gets dry, dab it by using a sponge and smudge it all. It does not have to be precise after all since the goal is getting the raw cement look. Once the board is completely dry, apply the matte finish. Here you have your food photography backdrops DIY.
